Panthers Sixth; Shippos Qualifies for Nationals

While the Tompkins Cortland Community College finished sixth as a team at the NJCAA Region III Championship tournament, Collyn Shippos (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) finished seventh among individuals and qualified for the national tournament for the second straight year.

As a team, the Panthers finished the two-day tournament at Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course with a score of 682 (339-343). Onondaga Community College won the regional title with a score of 639 (325-314) with Niagara County Community College second at 658 (329-329). Mohawk Valley Community College, the leader after day one, fell to third with a sore of 666 (322-344) followed by SUNY Adirondack in fourth with a 677 (342-335). Jamestown Community College was fifth, just two strokes ahead of Tompkins Cortland with a 680 (345-335). Jefferson Community College was seventh at 703 (353-350) and Genesee Community College at 726 (357-369).

Shippos earned his second straight trip to the national championship by following his opening 83 with an 80, giving him a two-day total of 163 that placed him seventh overall. The tournament was won by Mohawk Valley’s Dante Migliore for the second straight year, this time with a 144.

The Panthers’ Jack Myers (Lansing H.S./Lansing) had a strong day two to card a 166 (86-80) with Antonio Triana (New Roots Charter School/Cortland) next at 170 (84-86). Tyler Clark (Odessa-Montour H.S./Odessa) rounded out the team scoring with a 181 (86-95).

Shippos will take part in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament at June 5-9 at the Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, N.Y.

Coaches–Men's Golf

Mick McDaniel

Head Coach

Mick McDanielCoach McDaniel returned to the course for the 2014-15 year, bringing along some strong credentials. He previously coached Tompkins Cortland for more than a decade, putting together one of the most impressive runs of success of any Tompkins Cortland team in any sport. During a four year span, the Panthers won two Region III titles, never finished worse than third in the Region and had two top-seven finishes at nationals. He coached an individual national champion, a two-time All-American, three MSAC individual champions, and dozens of all-region and all-MSAC performers. Coach McDaniel has coached men and women golfers, including the College's first woman golfer to qualify for the national tournament, by working with each golfer on all facets of the game. His knowledge, experience, and coaching style translates to a positive experience for all his student athletes.

Patrick Collins

Assistant Coach

Coach Collins comes to Tompkins Cortland after spending seven years as the head golf coach at SUNY Broome. During his time with the Hornets he coached several regional and national qualifiers while creating one of the most consistent programs in the region. Having led a successful program, he brings to the Panthers an understanding of the game and what it takes to be successful on the regional and national level.

Coach Collins also spent eight years as head coach of the ice hockey team at SUNY Broome, earning Region III Coach of the Year honors three times. He remains a USA Hockey certified instructor and serves as head coach of the ice hockey team at Union-Endicott.
