Information Meeting Monday, August 28

Anyone interested in trying out for the Panthers golf team should plan to attend an informational meeting at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, August 28 in the athletics office. Coach McDaniel will provide information including the requirements for participating on the intercollegiate team, both on the course and in the classroom. Students will also have the opportunity to have any questions answered.

Panthers Honored for Academic Excellence

Eight Tompkins Cortland Community College student-athletes have been honored with a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Student-Athlete Award. Bridger Carreau (Lassiter H.S./Marietta, Ga.), Tyler Clark (Odessa-Montour H.S./Odessa), Anasah DeMember (Elmira H.S./Elmira), David Rodriguez (Grover Cleveland H.S./Ridgewood), Syed Shah (Pakistan), Collyn Shippos (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca), Joseph Sparacio (Ward Melville H.S./South Setauket), and Antonio Triana (New Roots Charter/Cortland) were recognized for their excellence in the classroom.

Carreau, Shah, and Triana each received “Second Team” designation, which goes to students with a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99. Carreau was a member of the lacrosse team; Shah played men’s soccer; and Triana was a golfer for the Panthers.

Clark, DeMember, Rodriguez, Shippos, and Sparacio each earned “Third Team” status, which goes to students with a GPA between 3.60 and 3.79. Clark was a golf; DeMember played women’s soccer and basketball; Rodriguez was a member of the basketball team; Shippos golfed; and Sparacio was on the lacrosse team.

The eight student-athletes represent the most Tompkins Cortland has ever had honored by the NJCAA in a single academic year.

Tompkins Cortland Community College

Tompkins Cortland Community College sophomore Collyn Shippos (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) finished 34th at the 2017 NJCAA Division III Championship tournament, carding a tournament score of 326. Shippos ended the four-day tournament with daily scores of 80-80-83-83, leaving him a 38-over par on the Chautauqua Golf Course. The tournament was won by Dante Migliore of Mohawk Valley Community College with a score of 282, six strokes better than the runner-up.

The 34th-place finish improved on his 60th-plae finish last year, and marks the seventh best finish in the history of Panthers golf. It also is the best finish since Kris Boyes won the national tournament in 2008.

Coaches–Men's Golf

Mick McDaniel

Head Coach

Mick McDanielCoach McDaniel returned to the course for the 2014-15 year, bringing along some strong credentials. He previously coached Tompkins Cortland for more than a decade, putting together one of the most impressive runs of success of any Tompkins Cortland team in any sport. During a four year span, the Panthers won two Region III titles, never finished worse than third in the Region and had two top-seven finishes at nationals. He coached an individual national champion, a two-time All-American, three MSAC individual champions, and dozens of all-region and all-MSAC performers. Coach McDaniel has coached men and women golfers, including the College's first woman golfer to qualify for the national tournament, by working with each golfer on all facets of the game. His knowledge, experience, and coaching style translates to a positive experience for all his student athletes.

Patrick Collins

Assistant Coach

Coach Collins comes to Tompkins Cortland after spending seven years as the head golf coach at SUNY Broome. During his time with the Hornets he coached several regional and national qualifiers while creating one of the most consistent programs in the region. Having led a successful program, he brings to the Panthers an understanding of the game and what it takes to be successful on the regional and national level.

Coach Collins also spent eight years as head coach of the ice hockey team at SUNY Broome, earning Region III Coach of the Year honors three times. He remains a USA Hockey certified instructor and serves as head coach of the ice hockey team at Union-Endicott.
