Cortland High All-Star Joins Panthers

Baseball recruit Alex Babcock with his brother signing his letter of intent to play at Tompkins Cortland

Recruiting Class of 2017
Alex Babcock
Hometown: Cortland
Position: Infielder
Height: 6-0
Weight: 200
Accolades: Alex is a two time all-conference performer, leading Cortland High to sectionals in all three years of his varsity career. He was also a career .300 hitter for the Purple Tigers.

Coach Stevens' Take: Alex is the younger brother of former Panthers baseball player Andrew Babcock, who has since continued his baseball and academic career at Wells College. Alex is a power hitter who will leaned on for middle-of-the-order production. He has a relentless work ethic and an excellent approach at the plate. We are excited to keep the Babcock bloodlines within our program. Alex will look to lock down the hot corner for the next two years for the Panthers, much like his older brother did the past two years.

Pulaski All-Star Signs with Panthers

Baseball recruit Jacob Mosher with his parents signing his letter of intent to play at Tompkins Cortland

Recruiting Class of 2017
Jacob Mosher

Coach Stevens' Take: Jacob is a very hard-nosed and versatile player. He comes from good baseball bloodlines and offers a dominant arm on the mound as well as a big bat at the plate. His high character and work ethic stand out, which will lead to a successful career here at Tompkins Cortland. Look for big things from Jacob over the next few years.

Oklahoma Standout Joins Panthers

Baseball recruit Christian Ballard with his Blanchard High coach signing his letter of intent to play at Tompkins Cortland

Recruiting Class of 2017
Christian Ballard
Hometown: Blanchard, Oklahoma
Position: Pitcher/Infielder
Height: 6-1
Weight: 185
Accolades: Oklahoma State Tournament appearance with Blanchard High School his senior year and helped Alpine High School (Texas) win the District title his freshman and sophomore years. Posted a 0.30 ERA with 21 strikeouts and only 7 walks through 36 innings pitched his senior year for the previous (2015) Oklahoma State Champion Blanchard baseball program, helping Blanchard to a top 5 ranking in the state for a good portion of the 2017 season.

Coach Stevens' Take: Christian is a high-character athlete who is a proven winner since starting his high school baseball career in Texas and then in Oklahoma. He has a relentless work ethic and commitment to his craft, and his leadership skills and intensity will be relied on heavily for the Panthers baseball program over the next two years. Ballard is a proven winner and he will help Tompkins Cortland Baseball reach new heights during his time in Dryden.

Coaches–Men's Baseball

Ryan Stevens

Head Coach

Ryan Stevens

Ryan Stevens has finished two seasons as head baseball coach. Stevens, who was an assistant at Tompkins Cortland from 2006 to 2010, took over as head coach for the 2014-15 academic year. His teams have shown steady progress and the program is poised to take the next step.

Stevens has built an impressive resume since starting his coaching career during his first stint at Tompkins Cortland. While on the Dryden campus he was the Panthers’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, helping build a brand new program into a playoff team. His time at the College coincides with the best four-year stretch in the program’s history, culminating with an NJCAA regional playoff appearance in his final season.

In 2008 he entered the world of professional baseball, taking a job with the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Independent Professional Continental Baseball league. After two years and a league championship with the Gunslingers, Stevens took his first head coaching job with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League, an independent professional league based in Texas with teams through the southwest. In five seasons as the manager of the Cowboys, Stevens has led the team to the postseason each year, capturing two league championships and posting an overall record of 208-119. He was named the Pecos League Manager of the Year, and has helped more than 50 players earn promotions to higher levels of professional baseball, including one, Jonathan Edwards, who is on a major league roster (Texas Rangers, pitcher). Two other of his players signed contracts with Major League affiliates: David Valesente (Pittsburgh Pirates organization, catcher) and Andrew Wall (Washington Nationals organization, pitcher).

Stevens, who also worked as an associate scout in the West Texas region for the Washington Nationals, served as an assistant coach at Ithaca College during the 2013-14 school year. He is a Dryden native, graduating from Dryden High before playing collegiate baseball at SUNY Cobleskill and Frostburg State University (Maryland).

Billy Crowe

Assistant Coach

2017 is Crowe's third year on the coaching staff, working with the catchers and infielders. A conference all star while at Bath-Haverling High, Crowe played two seasons at Tompkins Cortland, earning all-MSAC honors before finishing his collegiate career at Virginia Wesleyan University. He played professionally for two seasons under Coach Stevens with the Alpine Cowboys and coached at Cox High in Virginia Beach before joining the Panthers staff.
