Panthers Drop Two at Finger Lakes

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

The Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team saw its playoff hopes take a hit Tuesday. The Panthers, fighting for one of the four playoff bids in the NJCAA Region III West Division, entered the day in fifth place in the standings. But after dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Finger Lakes Community College, 6-2 and 10-3, the Panthers find themselves in sixth place and four games out of a playoff spot with just six games left on their schedule. Tompkins Cortland’s record in West Division play is now 11-13 (18-19 overall). Finger Lakes is in second-place in the West Division with a record of 17-7 (33-14 overall).

Tompkins Cortland and Finger Lakes complete the home-and-home series with a doubleheader Thursday in Dryden.

Ryan Stevens

Head Coach

Ryan Stevens

Ryan Stevens returns for his second season as head baseball coach. Stevens, who was an assistant at TC3 from 2006 to 2010, took over as head coach for the 2014-15 academic year.

Stevens has built an impressive resume since starting his coaching career at TC3. While on the Dryden campus he was the Panthers’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, helping build a brand new program into a playoff team. His time at the College coincides with the best four-year stretch in the program’s history, culminating with an NJCAA regional playoff appearance in his final season.

In 2008 he entered the world of professional baseball, taking a job with the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Independent Professional Continental Baseball league. After two years and a league championship with the Gunslingers, Stevens took his first head coaching job with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League, an independent professional league based in Texas with teams through the southwest. In five seasons as the manager of the Cowboys, Stevens has led the team to the postseason each year, capturing two league championships and posting an overall record of 208-119. He was named the Pecos League Manager of the Year, and has helped more than 50 players earn promotions to higher levels of professional baseball, including one, Jonathan Edwards, who is on a major league roster (Texas Rangers, pitcher). Two other of his players signed contracts with Major League affiliates: David Valesente (Pittsburgh Pirates organization, catcher) and Andrew Wall (Washington Nationals organization, pitcher).

Stevens, who also worked as an associate scout in the West Texas region for the Washington Nationals, served as an assistant coach at Ithaca College during the 2013-14 school year. He is a Dryden native, graduating from Dryden High before playing collegiate baseball at SUNY Cobleskill and Frostburg State University (Maryland).

A conference all star while at Bath-Haverling High, Crowe played two seasons at TC3, earning all-MSAC honors before finishing his collegiate career at Virginia Wesleyan University. He played professionally for two seasons under Coach Stevens with the Alpine Cowboys and coached at Cox High in Virginia Beach before joining the TC3 staff.

Panthers Shut Out by D-II Ace

Thursday, March 20, 2014

The Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team continued its spring break trip Thursday with a game against Division II at Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville. After weather changed the scheduled doubleheader into a single game, the home team handed TC3 a 10-0 defeat, dropping the Panthers to 0-3 on the year. Catonsville improves to 4-7.

The Panthers couldn’t get any offense going against the ace of the home team’s pitching staff. Josh Ahearn (Downsville H.S./Downsville) picked up TC3’s lone hit. Three others reached base via walks, and Brian Pfund (East Hampton H.S./Montauk) registered a stolen base.

The two teams are scheduled to face off again Friday with a doubleheader.
