Panthers Drop Home Pair

TC3 baseball

Playing one of the top teams in the region Sunday, the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team couldn’t muster enough offense to keep up, falling 6-3 and 6-2 to Erie Community College. TC3 is now 12-11 overall and 6-8 in the NJCAA Region III West Division. Erie is 22-11 overall and 11-1 in the West Division.

GAME 1: Erie 6, TC3 3
The visiting Kats took the early lead with a run in the top of the first, but TC3 responded. In the bottom of the frame, Rodney Jester (Tri-Valley H.S./Liberty) delivered a two-out, two-run double to put TC3 up 2-1. Neither team could mount an attack over the next two innings, as TC3 pitcher Josh Ahearn (Downsville H.S./Hancock) set the side down in order both innings and his Erie counterpart also held the Panthers at bay. In the fourth, Erie strung together three hits to score two runs and move ahead, but the home team again had an answer. Vic Jacobsen (East Anchorage H.S./Anchorage, Alaska) was the clutch hitter this time, lacing a two-out single to score the tying run. After Erie put two across in the top of the fifth, TC3 threatened in the fifth, but ended up stranding runners at the corner without scoring. An insurance run in the top of the seventh made the final 6-3.

TC3 finished with five hits, including two from Malik Fogg (Mount Vernon H.S./Mount Vernon. Ahearn took the loss on the mound, his first of the season after two wins. He threw five innings, allowing five runs on six hits, and striking out four.

GAME 2: Erie 6, TC3 2
The visitors struck early, scoring a run in the first and two in the second before TC3 put a runner on base. In the bottom of the second, Ty Christian (Altmar-Parish-Williamstown H.S./Williamstown) led off with a single, and moved to second on a single by Jester. After a fielder’s choice advanced Christina to third and erased Jester, Roki Mendoza Familia (George Westinghouse H.S./Brooklyn) drove in both runners with a solid single, cutting the Erie lead to 3-2. While TC3 starter Sam Allen (Moravia H.S./Moravia) kept Erie largely in check, the Panthers offense couldn’t get anything going. Over the final five frames, TC3 managed just two baserunners, and one was erased on a double play. The visitors tacked on two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, making the final score 6-2.

Allen took the loss, allowing just two earned runs over 4.2 innings. His counterpart kept TC3 off the bases most of the afternoon. The Panthers went a combined 4-for-24, all singles, and the team had just two at bats with runners in scoring position, both in the second inning.

TC3 hosts Jamestown Community College Tuesday, with first pitch of the doubleheader slated for 2 p.m.

Coaches–Men's Baseball

Ryan Stevens

Head Coach

Ryan Stevens returns to Tompkins Cortland Community College as the new head baseball coach. Stevens, who was an assistant at TC3 from 2006 to 2010, takes over as head coach for the 2014-15 academic year.

Stevens has built an impressive resume since starting his coaching career at TC3. While on the Dryden campus he was the Panthers’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, helping build a brand new program into a playoff team. His time at the College coincides with the best four-year stretch in the program’s history, culminating with an NJCAA regional playoff appearance in his final season.

In 2008 he entered the world of professional baseball, taking a job with the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Independent Professional Continental Baseball league. After two years and a league championship with the Gunslingers, Stevens took his first head coaching job with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League, an independent professional league based in Texas with teams through the southwest. In five seasons as the manager of the Cowboys, Stevens has led the team to the postseason each year, capturing two league championships and posting an overall record of 208-119. He was named the Pecos League Manager of the Year, and has helped more than 50 players earn promotions to higher levels of professional baseball, including one, Jonathan Edwards, who is on a major league roster (Texas Rangers, pitcher). Two other of his players signed contracts with Major League affiliates: David Valesente (Pittsburgh Pirates organization, catcher) and Andrew Wall (Washington Nationals organization, pitcher).

Stevens, who also worked as an associate scout in the West Texas region for the Washington Nationals, served as an assistant coach at Ithaca College during the 2013-14 school year. He is a Dryden native, graduating from Dryden High before playing collegiate baseball at SUNY Cobleskill and Frostburg State University (Maryland).

Panthers Open Season in New Jersey

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Wednesday saw the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team step on a baseball field for the first time this season, as the Panthers traveled to New Jersey to take on Cumberland County College. In addition to the home field advantage, Cumberland had the advantage of having played 15 games prior to today, winning ten of them against high level opponents. Not surprisingly, the result was a pair of losses for TC3, as Cumberland won 10-0 and 12-2. Cumberland is now 12-5 while TC3 is 0-2.

Each game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule. In the opener, Davyon Dozier (Brooks Debartolo Collegiate H.S./Tampa, Fla.) had the lone hit for TC3, leading off the fourth with a single and getting stranded at second after picking up the team’s first stolen base.

In the second game, Dozier again provided offensive highlights, but he wasn’t alone. Dozier went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Rodney Jester (Tri-Valley H.S./Liberty) also went 2-for-3, Wilson Montalvo (Newburgh Free Academy/Bronx) drove in a run and Jeremy Fredenburg (Mynderse Academy/Seneca Falls) doubled while going 1-for-1 with a walk.

TC3 continues its spring break trip by playing at Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville Thursday and Friday. The Panthers are scheduled to play doubleheaders against the Division II team both days.
