TC3 baseball

The Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team completed a season sweep of SUNY Broome Thursday, taking both games in Dryden, 13-2 and 13-10. The four wins over Broome in three days improves TC3’s record to 12-7 overall and 6-4 in the West Division. Broome drops to 0-8 overall and in the West Division.

GAME 1: TC3 13, Broome 2 (5 innings, run rule)
The start wasn’t pretty for the Panthers, as Broome scored twice before leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first inning. Things looked better in the bottom of the frame, when the Panthers scored three runs on just two hits, aided by a walk and a Broome error. Pitching with the lead, Jonathan Frost (Alpine H.S./Alpine, Texas) settled down after the first, shutting out the Hornets the rest of the way.

With the score still 3-2, TC3 opened things up in the fourth. Dana Scarselletta (Auburn H.S./Auburn) opened the frame with a walk, and after the next two batters were retired, six straight Panthers reached base as TC3 scored six times. Frost helped his own cause with a two-run double and Ty Christian (Altmar-Parish-Williamstown H.S./Williamstown) blasted a two-run homer to make it 9-2 after four. After Frost put up another zero in the top of the inning, The Panthers ended the game with a bang in the bottom of the fifth.

The first player to come to the plate was pinch-hitter Roki Mendoza Familia (George Westinghouse H.S./Brooklyn), who promptly lifted a homer over the left field fence for a 10-2 lead. One out later, Tyler Thigpen (River Ridge H.S./Woodstock, Ga.) reached on an error and Anthony Ferrezza (East Islip H.S./East Islip) singled. After the second out was recorded, Malik Fogg (Mount Vernon H.S./Mount Vernon) laced a line drive over the left-center fence for a three-run homer that made the score 13-2, ending the game due to the 10-run rule.

Fogg finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI. Frost and Rodney Jester (Tri-Valley H.S./Liberty) each went 2-for-3, with Frost driving in three runs.

Frost also earned the win on the mound, tossing all five innings and striking out four.

GAME 2: TC3 13, Broome 10
Both teams got their offenses going early in game two, with Broome scoring four in the top of the first and TC3 answering with three in the bottom of the inning. After loading the bases with three walks, the Panthers scored a run on a Jester sacrifice fly and a two-run double by Scarselletta. The Hornets added a run in the second, and TC3 responded by scoring two runs on no hits in the bottom of the inning to tie things at 5-5.

After TC3 starting pitcher Jeremy Fredenburg (Mynderse Academy/Seneca Falls) worked around two hit-batsmen in the top of the third to put up scoreless frame, the TC3 bats kicked into gear in the bottom of the inning. Fogg kick-started things with a leadoff home run, his second of the day and ninth of the season. Christian followed with a double and came around to score on a two-base hit by Scarselletta. A single by Familia was next, with a throwing error allowing the third run of the inning to score. After another scoreless top half, the Panthers took control in the bottom of the fourth, batting around and scoring four runs on five hits.

Broome rallied in the fifth with four runs to cut it to 9-12, but TC3 tacked on another run in the bottom, thanks to a single by Frost and a double by Fogg. Broome managed a run in the sixth, but could get no closer as the Panthers turned a double play to end the game with a score 13-10.

By the time the game ended, each TC3 player in the starting lineup had scored at least one run, with Christian crossing the plate three times. Christian, Fogg, Frost, and Scarselletta each had two hits as part of the 12-hit attack. Fredenburg earned the win on the hill, going four innings.

Next up for the Panthers is a home and home series with Erie Community College this weekend. The two teams square off Saturday in Buffalo before a Sunday twin bill in Dryden.

Coaches–Men's Baseball

Ryan Stevens

Head Coach

Ryan Stevens returns to Tompkins Cortland Community College as the new head baseball coach. Stevens, who was an assistant at TC3 from 2006 to 2010, takes over as head coach for the 2014-15 academic year.

Stevens has built an impressive resume since starting his coaching career at TC3. While on the Dryden campus he was the Panthers’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, helping build a brand new program into a playoff team. His time at the College coincides with the best four-year stretch in the program’s history, culminating with an NJCAA regional playoff appearance in his final season.

In 2008 he entered the world of professional baseball, taking a job with the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Independent Professional Continental Baseball league. After two years and a league championship with the Gunslingers, Stevens took his first head coaching job with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League, an independent professional league based in Texas with teams through the southwest. In five seasons as the manager of the Cowboys, Stevens has led the team to the postseason each year, capturing two league championships and posting an overall record of 208-119. He was named the Pecos League Manager of the Year, and has helped more than 50 players earn promotions to higher levels of professional baseball, including one, Jonathan Edwards, who is on a major league roster (Texas Rangers, pitcher). Two other of his players signed contracts with Major League affiliates: David Valesente (Pittsburgh Pirates organization, catcher) and Andrew Wall (Washington Nationals organization, pitcher).

Stevens, who also worked as an associate scout in the West Texas region for the Washington Nationals, served as an assistant coach at Ithaca College during the 2013-14 school year. He is a Dryden native, graduating from Dryden High before playing collegiate baseball at SUNY Cobleskill and Frostburg State University (Maryland).

Panthers Open Region Play with Split

Sunday, April 06, 2014

TC3 baseball

The Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team opened up Region III pay Sunday with a doubleheader split with Corning Community College. The Panthers dropped game one 5-1 before winning the second game by a final score of 14-6. TC3 is now 1-1 in Region III and 1-5 overall. Corning stands at 3-7 overall and 1-1 in regional play.

The opener was scoreless until the third, when Corning took advantage of a pair of errors to score three times. The Panthers got one back in the bottom of the fourth when Brian Pfund (East Hampton H.S./Montauk) singled with two outs, and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. The score remained 3-1 until Corning tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh. The Panthers put runners on in each of the final three innings, but couldn’t score, making the final 5-1.

Pitcher Zach Dufel (Amsterdam H.S./Amsterdam) was the hard-luck loser, allowing four hits and just two earned runs while striking out eight. Offensively, TC3 managed just three hits in game one. Game two saw the Panthers pass that total in the first inning.

After pitcher Tyler Mattoon (Lansing H.S./Lansing) set Corning down in order in the top of the first, the home team went to work. The first four batters had hits, and all would come around and score. A walk, a hit batsman, and a wild pitch contributed to a fifth run scoring, making it 5-0 after the first inning. Corning scored an unearned run in the second, but TC3 went back on the offensive in the bottom of the second, scoring five more runs on four hits and three Corning errors to put the game away. The visitors would score three in the third and another in the fourth, but TC3 cemented the win with a run in the third and three in the fifth. Corning scored the game’s final run in the sixth, making the final score 14-6.

Mattoon earned the win, striking out five while allowing four earned runs. All nine Panthers in the lineup had hits, with Chris Abreu (In-Tech Academy/Bronx), Davyon Dozier (Brooks Debartolo Collegiate H.S./Tampa, Fla.), Malik Fogg (Mount Vernon H.S./Mount Vernon), Steve Tatich (Owego Free Academy/Owego), and Sam Allen (Moravia H.S./Moravia) each collecting two hits. Fogg and Wilson Montalvo (Newburgh Free Academy/Bronx) each drove in three runs, and Dozier led the team with four runs scored.

TC3 plays at Onondaga Community College Tuesday.
