English Named All-MSAC

June 12, 2017

All-MSAC player Quincy English

Tompkins Cortland Community College sophomore Quincy English (Lehman Alternative Community School/Ithaca) has all-conference softball recognition from the Mid-State Athletic Conference. In voting by the coaches from the seven MSAC programs, English was one of the 16 players voted all-conference.

English was among the leaders for the Panthers in almost every offensive statistic. She was second on the team with a .340 batting average and led the squad with six home runs and 11 runs batted in. Her .787 slugging percentage was best on the team and her career mark of .711 ranks among the top ten in the history of the program. She also homered twice in a game two times this season, making four times that happened in her career, the most ever by a Panther.

Final Games of the Season Canceled

Wednesday, May 03, 2017

Panthers Sweep Fulton-Montgomery

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Tompkins Cortland Community College

Tuesday was a great day for the Tompkins Cortland Community College softball team as the Panthers rode several outstanding performances to a doubleheader sweep of Fulton-Montgomery Community College. The wins, 10-7 and 14-13, marked the first doubleheader sweep of the year and gives the Panthers a three-game winning streak for the first time since 2014. Tompkins Cortland’s record is now 3-7 on the season; Fulton-Montgomery is 1-3.

The current winning streak has been powered by a revitalized offense. After scoring a total of 12 runs over the first seven games of the season, the Panthers has exploded for 31 games over the current winning streak. And on Wednesday, the offense came through in the clutch as the Panthers rallied from early deficits in both games.

In the opener, Fulton-Montgomery led 5-0 in the second inning before the Panthers cut into the lead with two in the bottom of the inning and another one in the third. After the Raiders put a run on the board in the fourth, Tompkins Cortland pushed three across in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 5-5. In the fifth, Jordan Robinson (Dryden H.S./Dryden) led off the bottom of the inning with a triple to start a rally that would produce two runs and put the home team in the lead for the first time. Two more runs in the sixth made the score 10-6 heading into the final inning. A single run from Fulton-Montgomery wasn’t enough as the Panthers closed out the 10-7 win.

Seven Panthers had hits in the opener, with Marissa Vidal (Division Avenue H.S./Levittown) leading the way by going 3-for-4. Angela Martone (Candor H.S./Candor) went 2-for-3 while Quincy English (Lehman Alternative Community School/Ithaca) and Bailey Rose (Dryden H.S./Dryden) each went 2-for-4, with English blasting a home run and Rose ripping a pair of doubles.

In the second game, the Panthers again fell in an early hole, trailing 5-3 after two innings. Playing as the visiting team, Tompkins Cortland scored a run in the third to make it 5-4, and then completed the comeback in the fourth with three runs, taking the lead on another home run from English. By the time the inning ended, the Panthers led 7-5.

Neither team scored in the fifth, but both lit the scoreboard up in the final two innings. In the sixth, the Panthers scored five times, seemingly putting the game away with a 12-5 lead. But the Raiders rallied, scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning, all with two outs, to pull within one at 12-11 heading into the seventh. The Panthers added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and when Fulton-Montgomery took advantage of an error to score two times in the bottom of the seventh, the lead stood at 14-13 with one out and runners on first and second base. A ground out moved the runners to second and third, but winning pitcher Rose got the last hitter on a comebacker, ending the game with the tying run just 60 feet from scoring.

As a team the Panthers rapped out 20 hits in the win, with nine different players collecting at least one hit. Robinson and Martone each had four hits, with Robinson’s including a pair of doubles. Rose had two hits and drove in three, and Haylee Hennessy (Colton-Pierrepont H.S./Colton), Miranda Oot (McGraw H.S./McGraw), Kassie Murdock (Stillwater H.S./Stillwater), and Callie Stillman (Odessa-Montour H.S./Montour Falls) each had two hits.

Rose earned the win in the circle in each game, throwing all 14 innings. She struck out seven, and stranded runners in scoring position in eight innings.

The Panthers return to action at home against Jefferson Community College Thursday.
