Reference Books
Searching for Books
To find books on a particular person, look in the Library Catalog. Use the person's name as a Subject Heading, e.g. Sanger, Margaret, or Nightingale, Florence. To find more general studies, look under some of the following Subjects:
Important Point: If you cannot find books on your topic in the TC3 catalog, return to the Library Gateway and search the SUNY Catalog or Worldcat.

CINAHL, PubMed, Science Direct, or Proquest. CINAHL is an acronym for Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. To access it go to:
- Library Gateway
- Choose Research (the blue tab on the top left)
- Under Research choose Databases
- Under Databases choose Databases by Title
- Under Databases by Title choose CINAHL
- Use the subject heading "History of Nursing" (with the quote marks) to search. This will give you over 2,000 articles. To narrow your search by combining History of Nursing with another concept.
- Choose Search Methods and click on Advanced.

Important Point: Different databases have different interfaces. Ask a librarian if you need assistance in searching CINAHL or any other database.
