Great New Reads at the TC3 Library

Some great new books have recently arrived in the TC3 Library. You can also access a list of Tompkins Cortland Community College Library New Titles .

.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide
Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn [HQ1236.5 D44 K75 2009]
This book by the heroic journalists Kristof and WuDunn is a manifest for change. Why do we live in a world where millions upon millions of human beings routinely endure rape, forced marriage, sex slavery and even socially sanctioned murder and mutilation simply because they are women? Women's rights are human rights as this book eloquently argues. Also think about checking out Kristoff's wonderful blog On the Ground.

Guyland: the Perilous World Where Boys Become Men
Michael Kimmel [HQ799.6 K56 2008]
Sociologist Kimmel advances and explores a very interesting premise and question: why is it taking so long for American men to grow up these days? He finds his subjects in a male oriented world of fraternities, military academies and sports bars.

Renegade: the Making of a President
Richard Wolffe [E908 W65 2009]
Writer Wolffe shadowed the Obama campaign from its very beginnings. The result is a riveting page turner, despite the fact that the reader knows how the plot ends even before he/she cracks opens the book.

Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal Music
William Phillips [ML102 R6 P54 2009]
Now that even Eddie Van Halen is AARP eligible, it is time to acknowledge that Heavy Metal deserves its own place in music history. Fans of this genre will enjoy this A-Z compendium.

Wild Costa Rica: the Wildlife and Landscapes of Costa Rica
Adrian Hepworth [O-Size QH108 C6 H46 2008]
This lavishly illustrated book demonstrates why TC3 sponsored trips to Costa Rica have proved so popular. It is not a substitute for the journey, but the book will while away several wintry hours in Upstate New York.

Mongolia: Land of Genghis Khan
Achill Moser and Olaf Meinhardt [O-Size DS798 M45 2007]
Another stunning book of text and lavish illustrations takes readers to a world few of us outside China will ever visit. After reading this, however, you might feel an urge to book a ticket to Ulan Bator, the capital and jumping off point for travelers to Mongolia.

Empty Chairs Project: Loss After Suicide

Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services will present "The Empty Chairs Project: Loss After Suicide" at the Baker Commons, 1st and 2nd floors, from October 13 until November 23, 2009. The art exhibit features eleven chairs that have been altered, painted, and combined with objects by community members who have lost a loved one to suicide.

New Globe

Globe

Come and admire our handsome new Replogle globe. It replaces one bearing a 1967 copyright date acquired when TC3 was founded forty one years ago. What's changed since 1967? Plenty. The Union of Soviet Socialists Republics has dissolved, East and West German are now one and Yugoslovaia is no more. New on the map are Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), Namibia (South West Africa), Bangladesh (East Pakistan), and Burkina Faso (Upper Volta). Peking is now known as Beijing; Bombay as Mumbai. Orlando, Las Vegas and Cancun weren't even on the old globe, but they're there on the new one in big letters. Margaret Anderson

C-SPAN Video Library

By all means preview the C-SPAN Video Library Beta. There are thousands of videos consisting of congressional proceedings and committee meetings, National Press Club speeches, Public Affairs events, and interviews with authors and historians. You can also locate educational films on history, government and social issues. Code is provided so you can embed the video in your document.

Read C-SPAN's September 17, 2009 announcement: C-SPAN Unveils New Archival Website. The C-SPAN Video Library is an "entry to the vast history of public affairs events that C-SPAN has covered for the past twenty years. The collection is unrivaled in significant events that are documented in the C-SPAN video record. The indexing and now this site make this video record accessible in ways that here-to-fore were not possible. In reviewing the significant events, do not overlook many programs that may seem less momentous, but are equally important. In covering the routine meetings, news conferences, and briefings that occur every day, C-SPAN has built a record that allows you to now go back and see what people said when few were paying attention. Barack Obama appears on a panel on cities when he was a state legislator. Nancy Pelosi can be be observed in congressional hearings when she was a junior member of Congress. Our future leaders are on the House and Senate floor and on C-SPAN call-ins daily."

There is a wealth of multimedia on the Web: explore the offerings at TED Talks, University Channel, and Research Channel. For additional sources see the TC3 Library's guide to Finding Multimedia Online.
